Vastu consultation setup featuring a floor plan, compass, north direction, room details, measurements, and checklist of information to share with a Vastu consultant.

What to Share With a Vastu Consultant Before Your Consultation

If you’ve booked a Vastu consultation and aren’t sure what to send beforehand, you’re not alone. Knowing what to share with a Vastu consultant means your session is spent on your home rather than on collecting the basics.

Before a Vastu consultation, send a floor plan with the rooms labelled, the direction your main door faces (or north marked on the plan), your property type and floor, a few clear photos of key rooms, and a short note on what you’d like to improve. Your consultant will tell you if anything else is needed.

This guide walks through each item, how to get it, and what you can skip. If you’re still comparing options, start with our guide on how to choose a Vastu Shastra consultant online.

Vastu Consultation Checklist: What to Send at a Glance

Here is everything in one place. These are the main documents required for a Vastu consultation, and none of them need to be perfect.

Your Floor Plan: What It Should Show

The floor plan is the most useful thing you can send. A good Vastu consultation floor plan doesn’t have to be a professional drawing. It just has to be clear.

What a usable plan looks like

  • Every room is labelled (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, pooja room, living room, and so on)
  • The main entrance is marked
  • A north arrow is drawn on the plan
  • Approximate dimensions are included, if you have them
  • Each floor has its own plan if you live across more than one level

A builder’s brochure plan, an architect’s drawing, or a clear photo of a hand-drawn sketch all work.

No plan? Sketch one in 15 minutes.

  1. Draw the outer shape of your home on a sheet of paper.
  2. Walk room by room and draw the walls.
  3. Mark every door and window.
  4. Label each room.
  5. Add rough sizes if you can, in feet or even in steps.
  6. Mark your main door and a north arrow (see the next section).
  7. Photograph the sketch straight on, in good light.

Plan mistakes to avoid.

  • Cropped images that cut off part of the home
  • Blurry photos or low-quality screenshots
  • Rooms with no labels
  • A plan that no longer matches your home after a renovation
  • No north direction marked

How to Find and Mark Your House’s Facing Direction

It is easier to know how to find the north direction for Vastu. Only a phone compass is required.

  1. Stand inside your home at the main door, looking out.
  2. Open a compass app and hold your phone flat at waist height, away from metal objects and electronics.
  3. Note the direction in which you are facing.
  4. Mark North with an arrow on your floor plan, so the plan matches your real home.
  5. Write your facing direction on the plan.

Your house’s facing direction is the way you look when you stand inside the main door and look out. It is not the direction of the road or the manner in which you drive in. Take the compass readings twice, as phone compasses may differ slightly. If you have any doubts, state it, and your consultant will help you.

Directions matter because each part of a home is associated with a direction and an element. For background, read what Vastu Shastra is and how it works.

Photos and Property Details

Photos to take:

  • The main entrance, from outside and inside
  • The kitchen
  • Each bedroom
  • The living room
  • The pooja room
  • The bathrooms

Use wide shots in daylight so the entire room can be seen. No need to tidy up or stage anything.

Property details to include:

  • Property type (apartment, independent house, villa)
  • Your floor and the total number of floors
  • If you’re a homeowner or renter
  • Any planned renovation or move-in date

Tell Your Consultant What You Want to Improve

A short note allows your consultant to concentrate on what is important to you. Make it simple: Write questions, room use, and any changes you are considering. Vastu is all about alignment of space, and no one can guarantee results, so think in terms of space and not results.

Here’s a sample note you can adapt:

We live in a 3-bedroom flat on the 5th floor. Our main door faces east. We’re planning to repaint and move the study desk. We’d like advice on the kitchen and bedroom placement and on simple changes we can make without structural work.

Do You Need to Share Birth Details?

Not always. This will depend on the type of session you are booking, and your consultant will inform you at booking. When asked, give the date, time, and place of birth of the primary residents. If you don’t know the exact time, share what you know.

What You Don’t Need to Send or Change First

  • Don’t rearrange anything beforehand. Send your home as it is now.
  • You don’t need an architect-grade drawing. A clear, labelled plan is enough.
  • Don’t send ID, bank or payment details over chat or email for a Vastu consultation. Your consultant doesn’t need them.

Share only what you’re asked for, and if you’re unsure about something, ask before sending it.

What Happens After You Send Your Details

Once your details arrive, your consultant reviews your plan, direction, and notes and may ask follow-up questions if something is unclear. For an overview of the full Vastu consultation process, read what to expect in your online Vastu consultation and what a Vastu Shastra consultant does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a Vastu consultation without a floor plan?

Yes, in most cases. Sketch your home using the 15-minute method above and add photos of each room. If you truly have nothing, tell your consultant, who can advise on the best way to capture your layout.

Is a hand-drawn floor plan okay?

Yes. A hand-drawn plan works well as long as the rooms are labelled, the main entrance and north are marked, and your photo of it is clear and uncropped.

Do I need to send birth details?

It depends on your session. Your consultant will tell you when you book whether they’re needed. If they are, you’ll be asked for the date, time and place of birth.

How do I find north for my house?

Stand inside your main door looking out, hold your phone’s compass flat and away from metal, and note the direction you face. Then draw a north arrow on your plan so it matches your real home.

Do I need a site visit for a Vastu check online?

Many online sessions work from your plan and photos, but it depends on your property and the type of session, and your consultant will confirm. If you’re in Delhi NCR and weighing options, see our guide to choosing a Vastu Shastra consultant in Delhi NCR.
